Become a mentor to a 4th grade student without ever having to leave your home!
In this program, local seniors exchange letters back and forth with 4th grade students in Champaign, Thomasboro, Fisher, St. Joseph, Urbana, and Gifford. Seniors continue to write their student throughout the course of the school year. Ideally, a letter will be exchanged once a month between the student and senior, so seniors are asked to respond within 2 weeks of receiving a letter from a student. All letters are confidential between the student and senior, so any issues that may arise, (though few and far between), must be reported to the Pen Pal Coordinators immediately. Seniors are asked to keep the letters educational, light-hearted and most of all to have fun! Seniors will also have an opportunity to meet their pen pals in person at the end of the school year, (and no gifts given to the students, please!)
Please note that this program has traditionally been for seniors aged 55 plus, but we are willing to take other adult volunteers.
For more information please either call Jean Smith at (217) 356-1972 or Marsha Reardon at (217) 359-6500.
This opportunity is ongoing and runs until Thu, January 31, 2013.
RSVP is a network of senior citizens aged 55 plus who volunteer at social agencies and non-profit organizations in our community. RSVP covers volunteering throughout Champaign, Piatt, and Douglas County with over 800 volunteers working at over 170 volunteer stations! The program tries to match volunteers with the right volunteer opportunity that they would be interested in. Some of the perks that RSVP volunteers are offered are accidental death/dismemberment insurance, automobile insurance, and well as mileage reimbursement. Volunteers also receive a bi-monthly newsletter and are allowed to attend the annual luncheon.
If you are a senior and are interested in learning more about the program and where you can volunteer, please contact Marsha Reardon at (217) 359-6500 or at site.rsvp@gmail.com.

Help SHARE help horses by assisting us with our morning chores. Every morning we refill waters and distribute hay and grain to approximately 35 rescue horses awaiting adoption, being rehabilitated, or in sanctuary care. After the horses have eaten, we walk them outside to their pastures and turn-outs so they can spend the day outside. We look to get 1 person per day of the week, for example, volunteer to help with our Monday morning feedings. We also have an afternoon feeding which is a separate opportunity. We try to manage our volunteer shifts using this web site, so if interested you can drop us an email with questions, or head here to sign up: https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/643913/login/

During "pack-a-thon" sessions volunteers from our community read letters from Illinois inmates and choose books from our collection of donated materials to send to inmates at no cost in response to their requests, package those books and help move and sort incoming book donations. Most volunteers find that spending an hour or more doing this activity, then lending a hand for a few minutes on a small clean-up task is a very rewarding way to balance their time with us.
We encourage you to bring a snack or some music to share and to try out any of our three weekly sessions which may work for your schedule. We focus on offering a quality volunteer experience without the need to make a commitment. The first time you show up, you just need to arrive at the beginning of the advertised time slot and introduce yourself as a new volunteer. Our session leader will give you a short orientation and have you engaged in meaningful work within minutes. After that you are welcome to come back as often as you’d like and stay as long as you want.
Families, church groups, service organizations and other groups are welcome though we ask that if you’d like to bring more than 4-5 people we prefer some advanced notice and are also happy to tailor a volunteer opportunity to suit your group. People from 12-90 years of age should be able to fully participate, however our facility is located in the lower level of our building and there is no elevator or wheel chair ramp.
